After the last play test about two months ago , I put the whole game back into “revision mode”. I’m would like to find more groups of play-testers to see if the new changes work well. Since the last build of this game, I re-focusing the presentation of rules to focus onto the Lore Sheets (like Fate Aspects for characters) element in character generation. I made Professions into a type of Lore Sheet. And I re-designed the magic system to be a little bit more “build your own spell” like. Oh… and I changed the “engines” game from “Mash-Up System” to “Lore System RPG”. And made a website. I feel that the game now seems much more like a combination of Barbarians of Lemuria (with a more advanced magic system) with Fate’s character Aspects. Which… actually… is what I wanted at the very beginning of this project. So anyway… I’m looking for:
  • GMs who are willing to give the system a whirl.
  • Players will to try out and give feedback on the magic system.
  • People who are interested in how the Lore Sheets work and give feedback on such.
BELOW, at the bottom, are the links to the game folder. In that folder is the following: Character sheets in pdf format
  • The Rational Magic Rule Book (Please look at this if you want, but this is not the quickstart rules nor the play-test package… this is the whole shebang, minus some things that still need editing)
  • Play-Test Package – US Letter Size. This includes characters sheets, pre-gens, the 2 page player quickstart rules, 3 pages magic system, 4 pages GM advice, 20 or so pages of pre-made “Rude Awakening” campaign scenario, 5 pre-mades, several pages of Lore Sheets and character “Specials” for customizing characters, the GM’s Remit sheet, and some other things.
  • Player Quickstart Rules. These are more of a reference for players and GM. It’s only 2 pages… of course the rule- book is more complete.

What is Rational Magic

Rational Magic is a game of investigation, intrigue, and espionage set in a gritty “dystopian fantasy” world: a world that has evolved from a traditional sword and sorcery setting. Society is in upheaval, as competing economic and social ideologies compete to set people free or enslave them. In this world, players are agents who work either to maintain the status quo or rebel against the forces of magical modernity. Rational Magic uses the Lore System, which was purpose-built for this game. This system is meant to give you a fast and meaningful role playing experience which also ties a character’s story and development into the game world. It was developed by looking at some of the best (in this author’s opinion anyway) features of such games as FATE, Savage Worlds, Barbarians of Lemuria, and Warrior Rogue Mage. The Lore System dice mechanic and system basics are relatively simple. Characters are mechanically described with just a few attributes, a few special powers, and one or two descriptive Professions. This game promotes the Game Master to make rulings, instead of just following rules. Although this is essentially a traditional type of RPG, an important difference between Lore System and many other RPGs is that there is relatively little emphasis on “leveling up”. Instead, this game system uses a feature called “Lore Sheets” which define the character’s progress in the game world, grant mechanical power to relationships the character has cultivated, and might serve as a running log of the character’s accomplishments. —
