Rational Magic Lore Sheets and Story Hooks #1

Rational Magic is a game of investigation, intrigue, and espionage set in a gritty “dystopian fantasy” world; a world that evolved from a traditional sword and sorcery setting. Rational Magic uses the Lore Role-Playing Game (RPG) System, purpose-built for this game.

This blog post series shows-off Lore Sheets (link to SRD); a device used to describe character background, history, proficiency, and relationships.  Lore Sheets can be created by players, the GM, and by “Content Creators” (ie. me and other designers who adopt the Lore RPG System).  They provide players with world settings  as well as serve as convenient story-hooks.

□□□ Badly Designed Weapon of Mass Magic Destruction (Game Changer. TLS:_) With some effort, and using more mana than is contained within a human life force, lead can be transmuted into gold. But there is an 8 gram per cubic-centimeter difference in the density of gold and lead. Transmuting a teaspoon of lead into gold requires the siphoning, and loss of about 249 terajoules of energy. Scientific evidence confirms that this energy is almost entirely dispersed through various dimensions. However, if by chance even a small fraction of this energy is released in the vicinity of the conversion, a hole in space-time could rip open. These rips in the the fabric of reality serve as both lighthouse beacon and harbor to hungry gods from unknown voids.

Out of curiosity, I have created a device which converts matter without controlling the resultant energies and mana. I don’t know what this device will do; maybe it will destroy a city in a far off nation on a far off world or maybe it will destroy this damnable city.

The above is an example of a “Game Changer spell. It does things that the mechanical rules of the Lore System are not meant to emulate. Therefore, any effect it has needs to be interpreted and made-up by the GM.
