Rational Magic – The Resistance

Rational Magic is a game of investigation, intrigue, and espionage set in a gritty “dystopian fantasy” world; a world that evolved from a traditional sword and sorcery setting. Rational Magic uses the Lore Role-Playing Game (RPG) System, purpose-built for this game.

This blog post series shows-off settings and Lore Sheets (link to SRD); a device used to describe character background, history, proficiency, and relationships.  Lore Sheets can be created by players, the GM, and by “Content Creators” (ie. me and other designers who adopt the Lore RPG System).  They provide players with world settings  as well as serve as convenient story-hooks.

“They call us atavists. Relics from the old era. We are the leftovers. The ones who could not learn their special arts. The ones who cannot adapt to their enlightened ways. We are the ones who hold onto the beloved gods who they say never existed. We are not important to their councils. We are not important to their chambers. Even our labor, our sweat and tears, and our honor are not in demand.

We are not needed. Except…. Except…

They would take our bodies so they can live longer. Do not be fooled, they would remove our souls to power their weapons to fight others who are no better. I say, fuck their new way. Fuck their golems and undead workers. Fuck their imprinting stones and their magic wands. Fuck their godless new rationality. It’s time we take back our gods. It’s time we replace clay and necrotic rot with living flesh. It’s time to take back our worldand make it as it was before.

-Oaktree Ranglroot, “Calling of the Spirit”, (non-sanctioned) publication circa 79AD

There are many who do not like the Rationalization, but there is no one unified rebellion against the magical elites who rule over the nations of the world. Rather, there are many groups, such as the spiritualists, the humanist progressives, the former nobility, labor rights activists, tribal shamanists, and religious zealots who oppose the state of modern society.

The Magica Infinitum is one group which seeks to unite different factions in opposition to the Rationalization. It especially opposes forced soul-wiping. The name of the group is a reaction to what it views as the limited and circumscribed understanding of magic that is taught in universities.

The Magica Infinitum is barely an organization, as many of its members hate each other due to old feuds and differing ideologies. Some members want to work “within the system” to make changes to the Central Nations; other members see themselves as freedom fighters that the nation states call terrorists. The Magica Infinitum does not control any other group; it is merely an umbrella group which attempts to represent and unify disparate resistance movements.

Some members want to work “within the system” to make changes to the Central Nations; to make the developed nations become more “Sentientistic”. On the other hand, many members see themselves as freedom fighters and commit to actions which could be called terrorist acts. I work as a political operative of the Magika Infinitum. Many consider us a terrorist organization, but I fight to prove our legitimacy. Through this organization, I have many political contacts.
